Saturday 2nd – Teddy-bears’ picnic and crowning Carnival Princess and Attendants on the Millennium Green
A delightful event. Lots and lots of children with all sizes and shapes of teddies, having a wonderful picnic with extra attractions and lots to do and see. I was invited to crown the Carnival Princess and her two Attendants.
Saturday 9th – ASCape picnic at Salway Ash Village Hall
Salway Ash Village Hall has a fabulous outdoor space with play equipment, so a very good choice for their annual summer picnic. I am so impressed with the work ASCape do and the kindness and care they show. There were games for the children to play, stalls to browse, two miniature donkeys to stroke, some small creatures from faraway lands (in cages), a big BBQ, refreshments and home-made cakes. What’s not to enjoy on a lovely summer afternoon?
I don’t have any pics, but I have borrowed a snippet to explain what they do – “We are a charity supporting young Autistic people (plus those with Social Anxiety) and their families in West Dorset. We have a number of different support groups and activities for families, young people and parents/carers. The group is a voluntary organisation and raises its own funds. For more information go to: www.ascapegroup.org.”
Thursday 14 August – VJ Day 80 – Burma Remembrance event at St Mary’s churchyard.
I was pleased to be invited to attend the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph at St Mary’s and to say a few words on this important anniversary of the end of conflict in Japan.
Friday 15 August …….and at 11am in Bucky Doo, our Town Council took part in our own marking of the day, with our Town Crier and myself making speeches to the crowd. Paul Violet had organised a jeep to be there for the occasion. We feel it was very well received.
Both these events included respectful silences to give us time to think of those lost.
Saturday 16 August – Bridport Carnival + the Torchlight Procession
Wow! Bridport Carnival returns! We were worried it wouldn’t, but the wonderful team of Bridport volunteers rallied round and made it not only work well but triumphant! A show to be really proud of.
We were totally spoilt and carried there (from home) in a wonderful vintage car, first to choose ‘winning’ motorbikes (I even got to sit on one!) and then to be driven along in the carnival procession, waving like crazy at the huge crowds of happy people. Later, I was asked to present the winners with their prizes/trophies etc.
After the procession, Bucky Doo was full of dancing and very lively music, courtesy of “Static Flight” who kept everyone moving for the rest of the evening!

Sunday 17 August – Torchlight Procession
An event I would never miss! Just love it. I don’t know how many people took part, but the huge number of lit torches creating the ‘river of fire’ – from Bucky Doo all the way to West Bay was as spectacular as ever.
Live music in West Bay, a massive bonfire, and then fabulous fireworks to round it all off! We are totally spoilt for joy!

Wednesday 27 August – Bridport Musical Theatre Company – Shrek
Well – yet another fabulous show. BMTC performing again, at their very best. A wonderful, wonderful show. These talented people never fail to exceed expectations. This time we were treated to a performance of Shrek. The singing, the music, the scenery, the lighting, the costumes, the dancing, the acting, the energy and sheer joy that emits from this company is breathtaking. Three sold-out performances at the Electric Palace too! Well done BMTC!
