Death of Councillor Dave Bolwell

The death of Councillor Dave Bolwell last Friday has come as a great shock to the community of Bridport.

The Mayor of Bridport, Cllr Anne Rickard said:

“The very sad loss of Cllr David Bolwell has shocked us all and our hearts and minds are with his wife Bridget, and family. He was a very hard-working Town Councillor, also managing to fulfil duties in important roles as a Dorset Councillor as well as with us here in Bridport Town Council including his role as a ward member for West Bay ward. He even found time to give to the role of Deputy Mayor and then Town Mayor and after that, took on the role of Leader. When David was elected to Bridport Town Council, he brought with him much former experience from his service on West Wiltshire District Council which was a valuable asset to share with us too. David was a friend and colleague who will be much missed by us all.  His lively sense of humour and a great sense of fairness was also much appreciated.”

Dave was a hugely popular and well‑respected figure who brought enormous energy and commitment to everything he did. During his year as Bridport’s Mayor in 2023–2024, he worked tirelessly for local residents and represented the town with warmth, humour, and integrity.

Dave and his wife, Bridget, moved to Bridport in 2017 and quickly became central to community life. Their dedication and visibility made them widely known and trusted, and it was no surprise when Dave was elected to Dorset Council in 2019. He was re‑elected in 2024, when Bridget also won her seat. Together they ensured that Bridport’s voice was heard clearly across the county.

Before moving to Dorset, Dave had served for many years on West Wiltshire District Council, giving him a deep understanding of local government. He brought that experience with him, and since May 2024 he had served with distinction as Chair of the Western and Southern Area Planning Committee.

Cllr Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council said:

“Dave embodied the very best of public service. His colleagues have described him as the kindest man, an absolute legend, incredibly helpful and caring, and a lovely, warm, wise and thoughtful presence. He had a kind personality, was always helpful and honest, and he combined a logical mind with a great sense of humour. I will always be grateful for his sage advice, generously and gently given. He made every room brighter and every task lighter, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working with him.”

Dave was inspired by his father to get involved in local politics, and he led by example throughout his life. He took pride in achieving practical improvements for residents, no matter how small, and believed passionately in public service and community action.

Wayne Bennett, Chair of West Dorset Liberal Democrats, said:
“The loss of Dave Bolwell is felt very deeply. He was an important figure in our local party and I know he will be missed by fellow councillors and the many friends he made in Bridport.”

Dave Bolwell died on Friday 6 March at the Weldmar Hospice in Dorchester, following a short illness.
